But, really, the dog comes first
My Picture of the Day, yesterday
I did not expect that people would have such a fun time with this event – the shuttle buzzing Washington D.C. (I think I underestimated people.)
I did not expect Mom to be so entirely thrilled with the fly-by. Three times. (She was like a little kid chasing after a prop plane to get the pilot to wave it’s wings.)
Office roof-tops were full of photographers and schools emptied of students and teachers – all looking up. Watching the final flight in person.
And we were incredibly lucky to be in the right place at the right time to watch this last flight of Discovery.
I was … sad. I grew up with moon launches and space shuttles. I grew up thinking that science and astronauts are cool.
And now what will there be?

Back in 1984 I stood on a bridge over I-35W in an amazingly cold and rainy June Sunday to watch several black Russian limousines zoom by underneath, taking then-Premier Gorbachev to visit then-Governor Rudy Perpich for the day. Gorby was on his way from the Right Coast to the Left Coast, and none of the national media bothered to cover his visit to MN, but the local media were all over it.
I saw nothing but the black limos with blacked out windows, but it was still a tiny thrill.

My little brother and I had big plans to build a rocket in the backyard. We had notebooks full of information that we’d gathered from library books and NASA handouts. I’m sure it was only a lack to startup capital that kept him and me from being the first ones to land on the moon.
Of course, nowadays kids can gather more information in 5 minutes than we could in 5 months, but do they still have the dreams to go with it?
